Carbon Fiber Market 2026: 245K Tonnes on Wind & Hydrogen
After a round of capacity expansion and price correction, global carbon fiber demand returned to growth in 2026. Wind blades, hydrogen storage and transport, and lightweighting are the three main drivers.
Demand size: from 220,000 tonnes to a new level
Industry statistics show global carbon fiber demand reached about 224,500 tonnes in 2025, up 43.8% year on year. Market researchers expect the global market to grow from 207,830 tonnes in 2025 to 245,370 tonnes in 2026 and 562,770 tonnes by 2031, maintaining double-digit compound growth.
Three main drivers
First, wind energy. Larger blades are pushing a shift from glass fiber to carbon fiber, rapidly releasing demand for large-tow carbon fiber. Second, hydrogen. High-pressure storage vessels rely on carbon fiber winding layers to carry the main load, and hydrogen mobility and storage demonstration projects bring steady incremental demand. Third, lightweighting. Weight reduction requirements in automotive, rail transit, consumer electronics and sports equipment are moving carbon fiber from a premium option to volume application.
Prices and supply
New capacity released over the past two years has created temporary oversupply, putting pressure on prices for some general-purpose grades, while high-end specifications for aerospace and pressure vessels remain tight. This structural divergence is the most distinctive feature of today’s carbon fiber market.
What buyers should note
In a period of diverging prices, a stable raw material system and traceable batch quality matter more than comparing price per tonne. For projects requiring long-term supply, lock specifications and delivery schedules in advance.
