Type IV Hydrogen Tanks Drive Carbon Fiber Demand

As hydrogen mobility and storage demonstration projects are deployed, demand for high-pressure hydrogen vessels is rising fast. The load-bearing carbon fiber winding layer is becoming another large-scale application for large-tow carbon fiber after wind energy.

Type III and Type IV: carbon fiber carries the pressure

Type III vessels use a metal liner with hoop-wound carbon fiber, while Type IV vessels use a plastic liner fully wrapped with carbon fiber. Operating pressure is typically 35 MPa or 70 MPa. The metal liner has limited load-bearing capacity, so the carbon fiber layer carries the main load, and fiber strength, modulus and winding process directly determine vessel weight and safety margin.

Demand drivers

Hydrogen fuel cell heavy trucks, buses, ships and distributed energy storage are the fastest-growing segments. Longer vehicle range pushes up the share of 70 MPa vessels, while stationary storage focuses more on cost and service life, with demand concentrated on large-tow fiber.

Technology and cost

Carbon fiber accounts for a large share of Type IV vessel cost. Improving winding efficiency, optimizing the lay-up pattern and reducing fiber waste are the main routes to lower cost. At the same time, permeation, fatigue and burst safety in hydrogen environments require rigorous type testing and standard certification.

Supply chain opportunities

Suppliers that can reliably provide 40K+ large tow and match sizing and interface performance will win long-term orders in hydrogen storage. For vessel makers, a joint validation system covering fiber, resin and winding process is more important than single-point purchasing.
