eVTOL & Drones: New Carbon Fiber Demand
As low-altitude economy policies are implemented, eVTOL aircraft and large drones are entering airworthiness and mass-production phases. Weight-critical airframes are pushing carbon fiber composites into a new volume market.
Why eVTOL cannot do without carbon fiber
eVTOL aircraft are extremely sensitive to range and payload. Fuselage, wings, rotor blades and battery pack enclosures all need substantial weight reduction while maintaining strength. Carbon fiber composites offer high specific strength and design freedom, allowing stiffness and weight to be balanced through lay-up optimization, and most models use a significantly higher composite share in their structure than conventional helicopters.
Material grades and processes
eVTOL structures typically use T800-class intermediate-modulus carbon fiber, with higher-modulus grades for some high-stiffness parts. Manufacturing relies mainly on automated fiber placement, autoclave curing and resin transfer molding, with emphasis on porosity control and batch consistency to meet airworthiness requirements for structural integrity.
Market rhythm
Large logistics and inspection drones have already entered mass production, with carbon fiber demand concentrated in frames, propeller blades and payload bays. Passenger eVTOL remains in the certification stage; once a type certificate is obtained and batch deliveries begin, carbon fiber content per aircraft will be markedly higher than consumer drones, creating a new incremental market.
Supply chain requirements
Low-altitude aircraft customers are smaller than major aerospace OEMs but more sensitive to delivery schedules and cost. Suppliers able to offer small batches, multiple specifications and fast response in carbon fiber and prepreg will find it easier to enter this emerging supply chain.
